Born into poverty in St. Louis, dancer and singer Josephine Baker progressed from vaudeville to New York theater to the Parisian cabaret scene and became the toast of Europe before the age of 21.
Here is La Baker in one of her "supper club-esque" performances, recorded at the Golden Orpheus Festival in Bulgaria in 1970. Unlike the cabaret spectacles she was famous for, Baker's performances of this type gave her a chance to interact with her audience in an intimate setting, complete with a small band. Here one can hear her velvet voice and marvelous charm.
